Back in 2009, I worked as Art Director on a MMORPG project for an independant French company: the project got canceled pretty quickly but I had to wait quite a long time, before posting the following concepts aiming to give the visual instructions for a RPG in isometrical view. Some concept pictures I did for Spicy Horse studios back in 2008, during the very early stages of gameplay brainstorming for Alice Return in Madness. I was asked some colorfull ans twisted pictures, testing a new art direction, but they chose to return to the initial Alice McGees dark atmosphere finally. And they ended making a great game :3

About one year and a half ago, I stated working on a very special comics project : Run, the creator of the acclaimed Mutafukaz comics ( >> check it ! A great tribute to pulp, street and gangsta culture ) offered me the chance to work on a very special one shot issue that would give a conclusion to the whole story, and that would take place in a surreal Las Vegas …

Today the project is on standby, I hope we can start again working on it, but after 1,5 years I thought I could share some of the first tests I did when we started working together… I hope you dig these pages !

"Par-Delà les murs du monde" de James Tiptree Jr. est sorti vendredi dernier, j'ai eu la chance de faire la couverture non conventionnelle de ce livre non conventionnel... Voilà qui change de ma production habituelle, Ce fut un plaisir de bosser dessus et de s'essayer à une illustration plus... cosmogonique :3

The French new edition of "Up the walls of the world", from James Tiptree Jr. just hit the stores, working on this cover has been a nive occasion to try something different, an uncommon illustration for an uncommon book !

It is now out ," Los Tigres Del Ring ", by Jimmy Pantera ... A wonderful book about the whole Lucha Libre culture; Jimmy has a huuuge collection of vintage comics, exclusive vintage photo-stories, radioactive toys, photos, and anecdotes and knows how to share his passion for the Mexican wrestling. Lucha libre is quite a trendy thing these days, but "Los Tigres Del Ring" has soul !

( I had the chance to paint the cover, in a photorealistic/painterly way this time, I really enjoyed doing it ! )

I just realized I never shared the following picture, made for the American mag Brandweek. This picture was made in summer 2007, it's related to the fight of Campbell brand to stay leader of cans market. the art direction had some sort of Gulliver metaphor for the picture, I loved the idea and had much fun with this one :

Feeling so tired and lazy these days ... Maybe Paris is a bit getting on my nerves, I need to push the colours on my recent stuff to forgot the greyness of things ! I'm definitely not totally the same guy who used to work only with black, white and sepias. Some people told me they miss my old stuff, but I don't think I can step back from colourful pictures !

Today is a special day, sort of. I finally created the blog I promised myself to do, so much easier to give news and art samples that way ! Of course my main website emmanuelmalin.com is still the best place to keep updated about my finished works, but in this Pagan Trees Blog it is going to be all about work process, sketches, and news about publications and stuff.

To begin, I will leave a piece of art made for the Cafésalé contest, an exhibition to be launched in partnership with Ankama for the Ankama Convention in Lilles, December 20-21st. The theme is " Vampires ", I chose to work on creatures discovering the sunlight for the first time while they thought it was harmful to them ...
